Search and Research #23

Welcome to a new week everybody. I just want to prepare you all for the fact that there are only going to be two strips this week due to the American Thanksgiving holiday.

On a separate note, a couple of the friends who have seen today's strip were confused by the main premise, so I'm going to leave a comment that tries to further explain. My friends couldn't offer any good suggestions on how I could improve the strip, so, I inked it as is. Hopefully it will be funny. If anyone can think of a way I could have done this better, please comment. I'm still learning, and can use all the help I can get.

Thanks and enjoy!

Ok, the idea here is that the system outage actually takes our characters 80 years into the past, so Marc is now wearing suspenders, a button down shirt, and a tie; SCOM has vacuum tubes, etc. Since Opal lives about 80 years in the past all the time, she relishes these moments. However, my friends couldn't figure out why Marc and SCOM had suddenly change. How could I have illustrated this change better? Or was it ok?

First, perhaps a zigzaggy connection or some sort of fade or the like between the first two panels to make it obvious that something is changing. Second, make the differences a bit more obviously anachronistic. Perhaps change SCOM into a talking card cabinet. Don't be afraid to stereotype to get the point across. Eighty years back would be the Roaring Twenties, so give the guy a flat hat and a raccoon coat or a gangster fedora or something similarly iconic. Third, a background picture or book changing suitably e.g a picture of a Ferrari becoming a Model A.

I think it was fabuluous. But then our computer system was down, and I actually had to write down the titles of all books checked out for over a week so I REALLY feel their pain.

Great strip. I think Marc looks like a 30´s Clark Kent. You really got the "feeling" when the system is down. Way to go!
